Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) DMScreen_735

Everyone's heard of D&D, it's the legendary (and typical) nerd game that can be played with paper, dice, and a good imagination Smile

Anyone here a fan of the game? Do you prefer 2nd, 3rd, or 4th edition of the game?

I suppose I used to play this a bit but not any more. It was good whilst it lasted but I could never get back into the swing of things.

I'm a great player, I used to be a good DM too but I stopped DMing for too long and now it seems difficult for me to start again :/

D&D isn't a board game, it's paper and dice which is actually much different Surprised
The video games aren't real D&D, real D&D is played with a pen, dice, and paper - and the 3 rule books which are like 300 pages each Razz

Well, one person plays as the "Dungeon Master" and creates a world for the players to play in, the players play in the DM's world as the DM basically refes the game making sure the rules are being followed (and describing to the players what's going on)

Here's an example of play...

(player 1 is Cleric)
(player 2 is Fighter)
(player 3 is Wizard)

DM: You walk down the stones stairs into the darkened temple, as you make your way down you can see the sun light fade out of sight

Player 1: Alright, I'll use light a torch

DM: Player 1 lights the torch, the stairway is now luminated

Player 2: I'll follow him down, keeping my axe ready

Player 3: I'll stay in back of the line

DM: You reach the end of the stairs, you are now in a 50 by 50 room, spiderwebs lace the stone wall and there is molded wood broken all over the ground, there is a shattered wooden door to your north *DM draws out the place on grid paper*

Player 1: Hm, looks like something happened here... maybe an attack

Player 2: I'll search the room for signs of struggle *rolls 20-sided dice* - *Rolls a 13 + Search skill + Wisdom*

DM: You find some arrow shafts under the wood, it has markings on it, looks Elven

Player 3: My character knows Elven, can I read it?

DM: Yes, it says "Kingdom of Minegarde"

Player 1: So the elves of the Minegarde Kingdom was here... interesting...

There's an example of some gameplay, combat had a lot of rules to it, and once you learn them it's a very fun part of the game

No problem Very Happy
It's possible to play it online in that fashion, but it's not quite the same as playing it in a dark room with your friends

It isnt that nerdy really, only about as nerdy as your group really. I've played with friends in a dark room as well as trying it over MSN, room is better.

Me and a friend have been considering starting a new campaign over MSN, just not sure what we should do in it.

Also, I have the Core Book 3.5
Complete Adventurer
and Complete Warrior

Although he knows someone with PDFs of nearly every book ever made.

Here I have the Dungeon's Master Guide 3.5, Player's Handbook 3.5, and Monster Manual 3.5 - 4th edition isn't worth the time by the way, its not that great

I have plenty of ideas for campaigns I could share, and count me in if you are looking for another player

lol, my experience goes something like this:

Player 1: Half Orc Barbarian
Player 2: somthing else (me)
Player 3: somthing else (different than something else)

DM: you come across a stone door
Player 1: I BASH THE DOOR DOWN WITH MAH AXE
DM: roll
Player 1: 4
DM: you fail, everyone knows where you are, you get swarmed by 50 enemies. Oh, and the door was unlocked

Hah, my experience was kind of like that, except I was a Githyanki Black Guard, my friend was a half-changeling Sorcerer I think and the third was a half elf Ghost-Faced Killer(basically a ninja that can go into the ethereal at will). She went ghost and ditched us...

That's the great thing about free will in an open enviroment game, anything can happen
And though you rolled a 4, not everyone would know where you are, there may have not actually been anyone around you Razz
I guess that in case they were :/

Well when you're raiding a rich district's temple filled with a super devout following, they'll notice a breaking and entering.

we were in a cave, I think the door was metal not stone, It would have been loud (and the DM got pissed)

we just started, the DM said he would have had to roll a natural 20 to actually hurt the door
